How The Yogic Concept Of Tapas is More Relevant Than Ever

The yogic niyama of tapas is often associated with discipline, commitment, and the willingness to stay with something even when it is uncomfortable.

We live in a culture that increasingly tries to eliminate inconvenience. We can get almost anything quickly, avoid waiting, automate tasks, and remove friction from daily life.

Much of that is helpful. But not all discomfort is a problem to solve.

Some forms of effort build us.

Doing something difficult can strengthen patience. Staying committed when motivation fades can build self-trust. Working through uncertainty can develop confidence. Choosing not to immediately escape discomfort can teach us that we are capable of more than we thought.

Tapas is not about suffering for the sake of suffering. It is about recognizing that growth often requires some heat, effort, and persistence.

The question is not, “How can I make everything easier?”

Sometimes the better question is, “What is this challenge helping me develop?”

This is something I explore often in my retreats and programs. We practice creating enough space to notice when discomfort is simply something to avoid, and when it may actually be an invitation to grow.
